I have an older 34401A (firmware rev 3-1-1), and have connected it to my windows 7 x64 machine via a USB-RS232 converter (a Tripp-Lite Keyspand USA-49WG). At one stage I did reinstall the BenchVue software, and after a PC reboot, I was able to communicate with my 34401A and perform some measurements. Halfway through the measurements, my PC reset unexpectedly, and when it rebooted, I could no longer connect through the BenchVue software. In the Keysight Connection Expert, I can "Send Commands to this Instrument" and everything seems to be working fine. In the BenchVue software the 34401A comes up under the hidden or unsupported instruments with the green tick (I guess indicating that it is hidden, but supported). The "show" button is grayed out, and try as I may, I cannot get the 34401A to show up! I have attached a couple of screenshots to help explain what I am seeing. We have found that if you log in as one user, start the 30 day trial, then log in as a different user, it reports that your trial has expired. Do you have two different logins? If so, try the other one. If not, then this is one more case of the premature expiration of the trial license, and we'd like more details as to exactly what the chain of events was, in as much detail as you can remember. I may have a guest account, but I never use it. The chain of events as best I can remember is as follows: 1. I downloaded and installed the latest BenchVue. I manually added my instrument, and then in the instrument screen I updated the drivers for the 34401A (which downloaded and installed the IVI drivers). 4. I then ran BenchVue, and I could not "show" the 34401A. 5. At this point I ran a terminal program on my PC and tried to connect directly to the 34401A myself, and since the Connection Expert was already connected to the serial port I think there was some conflict, and the terminal program stopped responding. 6. I walked away from my PC at this point, and when I returned it was restarting (I'm not sure why). 7. Once it restarted, I could not run BenchVue as I got an error message after the splash screen that the license server could not be contacted or something, and I should wait a few seconds or reboot. 8. I did both, waited, then rebooted. Still to no avail. I could not get BenchVue to run. 9. I then uninstalled and reinstalled BenchVue. 10. It still would not run (even after a reboot). 11. I then ran Control Panel -> Programs and Features, and noticed the application "Keysight License Service". This is probably the issue, but I right clicked and hit repair on this application. 12. BenchVue then ran ok, and I could now see the instrument for the first time, but I was also informed that my trial period had expired. 13. I started using the instrument to log some voltages (for about 50minutes or so, over a couple of start stop sessions). At this point I walked away from my PC for a bit to do some hardware stuff, and noticed the screen had gone blank (I thought it was just the screen saver), but then the PC rebooted. I'm not sure what caused that unexpected reset, but I don't usually have unexpected resets, and this was the second one since installing the Keysight applications. 14. Then when I hit rescan under the instruments tab, the 34401A comes up. Is this the correct way to add the instrument? BenchVue shows the 34401A as a hidden or unsupported instrument. I have found that I can get BenchVue to recognise the instrument only if I follow the following steps: 1. Delete the AppTabDB directory 2. Run BenchVue (and get and error message that I then close) 3. Re-instate the deleted AppTabDB directory (from the copy you have posted above). 4. Re-run BenchVue. If I omit step 2, then BenchVue will still not recognise the instrument. Note that I have to follow these steps every time I reboot my Windows 7 machine. The connection expert seems to work fine, it is just that BenchVue doesn't recognise the instrument until the above procedure is followed. NB, regarding the BSOD: As a rule I never encounter them - I only ever see them if I am running BenchVue (and the BSOD message mentions something about an IO driver that looks suspiciously like a Keysight driver - I'll jot it down if I see it again). This is obviously a bug with BenchVue, and not something I am doing! UPDATE: I have updated from BenchVue 3.0 to 3.1. After a reset, it recognised the instrument - so far so good. I also had another BSOD whilst logging. The Windows message pointed to the driver for my RS232 to USB serial adapter. I have now upgraded that driver, so hopefully will no longer see that issue.
