Have you been shopping for an engagement ring and been disappointed by the high price tag on anything that you liked? Are you tempted to throw in the towel on diamond shopping and look for a diamond look-alike ring instead?
You are not alone. A good number of soon-to-be engaged couples are deciding to forgo the diamond and go for a fabulous fake instead. And with so many great options to choose from, you can go that route without anyone ever knowing.
Still, some fake rings are obviously fake, while others can fool even the most discerning eye. Below are some tips to pull off a brilliant engagement sans diamond.
1. Opt for a 14k Gold Setting
There are many reasons to go for a 14k gold setting on an imitation diamond ring. Even though this option is more expensive up front, you will reap the rewards in longevity of your chosen ring. Unlike cheap alloys, 14k gold will not rust, turn your finger green, or bend out of shape easily. If your chosen setting has pave stones, this is a more secure setting to prevent loss of stones.
Most importantly, if you plan on being married with a gold wedding band, it will look seamless next to your engagement ring if you plan to wear them no the same finger, as most women do.
2. Stay Small to be Believable
If you just spent the past 6 months whining to your friends that you could not get engaged because every ring you like was too expensive, and then you show up with a huge piece of ice on your hand you friends will either think you just robbed a bank, or that your ring is a fake.Stick with a realistically sized ring. No more than 2 ct. But honestly, 1 carat is probably the sweet spot for a believable fake ring.
3. Say No to Celebrity Look Alike Rings
I know it is tempting to go for the JLo Pink Diamond look alike engagement ring or the Kim Kardashian step cut trapezoid knock-off ringonce you decide to go the fake ring route. But remember, this is a ring you are (hopefully) going to be wearing for a long time. Get a classic style that is not trendy or fad-y – and especially not on the cover of People magazine. Per my recommendations above, make it classic, make it small and believable, and most important, make it gold. And no one will be the wiser.
